How long does filler last (and is it worth it)?

When it comes to facial fillers, one of the first questions we hear is: “What is filler?”

Followed by, “How long does it last?”

Right behind that? “Is it actually worth the cost?”

All totally fair questions! In this post, we’ll break down what you can expect from dermal fillers in terms of longevity, results, and value. Whether you’re new to the world of injectables or considering a refresh, here’s what you need to know before booking.

What are fillers, exactly?

Dermal fillers are injectable treatments designed to add volume, smooth lines, and enhance facial contours. Most are made with hyaluronic acid (HA)—a substance your body naturally produces to retain moisture and keep your skin plump.

Common treatment areas include:

  • Lips
  • Cheeks
  • Smile lines (nasolabial folds)
  • Chin and jawline
  • Under eyes

To be clear: fillers are not the same as Botox, which relaxes muscles to reduce wrinkles. Instead, fillers physically fill in or restore lost volume. Some folks will also seek filler for medica reasons to treat facial depressions from trauma or scarring, or to correct a facial asymmetry caused by injury.

So… how long do fillers actually last?

The short answer: anywhere from 6 months to 2 years. We know, we know, that’s a long range, ha. But the truth is, it depends on the type of filler, treatment area, and your individual body chemistry. Generally speaking, though, this is the typical range folks can expect to see

Here are some factors that can affect the longevity of your treatment:

  • Metabolism: Faster metabolism = faster filler breakdown
  • Area of injection: Areas with more movement (like lips) tend to break down filler quicker
  • Type of filler used: Thicker fillers last longer than thinner, more flexible ones
  • Lifestyle: Smoking, sun exposure, and poor hydration may speed up breakdown

Are results really noticeable?

Yes! When done right.

A skilled injector will create subtle, natural-looking results that enhance your features, not change them entirely.

For instance, at Siana Aesthetics, our approach is all about balance, proportion, and personalization. We’ll work with you to highlight what’s already beautiful, while softening areas that may have lost volume or definition over time.

Most will typically see results immediately after treatment (with full settling in a week or two).

Is it worth the investment?

Like most things in life, the return on investment comes down to your goals. Full transparency, dermal fillers will run you approximately $650 for the first syringe, and $600 for each additional syringe.

Benefits of filler include:

  • Instant gratification (results in minutes)
  • Longer-lasting effects than many other treatments
  • Non-surgical enhancement with little to no downtime
  • A confidence boost that’s hard to put a price on

That said, it’s not just about cost. It’s about choosing a provider who listens to your goals, uses high-quality products, and prioritizes your safety and satisfaction.

What about upkeep?

To maintain your results, most clients return for touch-ups once or twice a year. Some areas—like lips or under-eyes—may need more frequent care, while structural areas (like the chin) can go longer between appointments.

We usually recommend all patients:

  • Stay hydrated
  • Wear SPF daily (which you should do anyway!)
  • Avoid smoking or heavy sun exposure
  • Book maintenance appointments before your filler fully dissolves (it’s easier to maintain than start over from scratch)

So, should you try filler?

If you’re curious about dermal fillers, here are a few signs you might be a great candidate:

  • You’re noticing volume loss or deepening lines
  • You want a subtle enhancement without surgery
  • You’ve tried other treatments but want longer-lasting results
  • You’re ready to invest in your appearance and confidence

Whether it’s adding contour, restoring volume, or creating symmetry, filler can be a powerful (and empowering) option when done by the right hands.
